Following a fatal fire in a house with numerous code violations, the City of Rochester says it has made considerable progress on addressing the issue of rundown housing.

The City’s Housing Quality Task Force gave a report on Wednesday, with Mayor Malik Evans saying he’s proud that the city is increasing its number of code enforcement officers by 15, and using them to target property owners who violate city codes. The city says it’s brought more landlords of rundown properties into court the last five months than in the past several years.

Mayor Evans says the days of tolerating properties that look like a slum are over.
