Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said in a news conference Tuesday that the city is suing numerous gun manufacturers including Beretta, Bushmaster, Glock, Remington and Smith and Wesson. The city says the companies are fueling the city’s wave of gun violence by manufacturing thousands of guns that have been recovered at crime scenes.

The suit is also against firms that make gun parts which can be assembled into so-called “ghost guns” which don’t have serial numbers.

The suit seeks to hold them responsible for illegal sale and distribution of firearms, contributing to the surge of violence in Rochester.

The city will seek both compensatory and punitive damages, as well as creation of a violence abatement fund and attorneys’ fees.

The suit was filed Wednesday afternoon and ran some 200 pages.
