Deputy Mayor Len Redon got a standing ovation at his final Rochester City Council meeting Tuesday night.
Redon is leaving at the end of the month. He’s retiring to face a major health challenge, said by some reports to be cancer. Redon said he’s going to fight it and win.
City Council also voted to approve Mayor Lovely Warren’s $516 million budget for the next fiscal year. It closes a $41 million revenue gap with the help of $6 million in state aid, lowers property taxes and puts 20 more police officers on the streets.
Council held off taking action on legislation submitted by the mayor to move forward on a park and river promenade above the entrance to the abandoned Rochester subway. It would be built in connection with Morgan Management’s plan for a five-story mixed condo and retail building by the River behind Dinosaur Barbecue. The building would close off access to the tunnel, which preservationists oppose.
Public meetings are planned next month, and council decided to wait until then.
