Monroe County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe a Chili man scammed more than 50 people with a fake snowplowing business until he was arrested today.
The sheriff’s office has charged Charles Stevens with scheming to defraud and multiple counts of petit larceny. They say the 29 year old man began advertising in late November on an app called “Nextdoor” advertising plowing services. The victims met with Stevens and paid a $120 fee, but he never showed up when the snows came.
The sheriff’s office says deputies investigated and found that Stevens has a suspended drivers license and doesn’t own a vehicle. By the time he was arrested, Stevens had defrauded more than 50 people and the sheriff’s office believes there may be more out there. They’re being encouraged to call 911.
Meanwhile, Stevens is being held on $2,000 bail
