The New York State Legislature has adopted a rewrite of its laws against child abuse…and Governor Cuomo says he’ll sign it into law.
After more than a decade of opposition from Republicans in the State Senate, the bill passed under the new Democratic Majority.
The Child Victims Act (CVA) expands the statutes of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse to 55 for civil lawsuits….and 28 for criminal accusations. It will also provide a one-year lookback window to allow survivors with expired claims to seek justice and and eliminate the requirement to file a notice of claims within 90 days of the date of harm.
Governor Cuomo met with a victims’ advocacy group saying he’ll sign the bill. Cuomo said the only sin greater than abusing a child would be protecting those who abuse a child.
