Rochester’s police chief says officers followed correct procedure and department policy when they hadcuffed a 10-year-old girl during a recent incident.
Officers said they handcuffed the girl because she was pulling away from them on a busy highway and was in danger of running into traffic.
In a statement, Chief La’Ron Singletary says he reviewed the body camera video from the officers during their traffic stop on Route 104 and video that was posted on social media. He says the officers did nothing wrong.
The officers pulled over a car that had an expired inspection sticker and a missing license plate. The driver refused to show ID and all in the car claimed so-called “sovereign citizen” status. All three adults were eventually arrested and the girl handcuffed for a time. The city has begun a review of its policy regarding children in handcuffs.
