Rochester Mayoral Candidate Malik Evans has been endorsed by former Rochester Police Chief and nationally-known export in policing Dr. Cedric Alexander.

Alexander talked about the relationship of mental health care with police services 15 years ago, and about  community policing during his time as chief. On Tuesday he said he’s known Evans since he was a student in 1997 and believes he’s a unique individual, a reputable family man and a Christian.

Alexander said Evans has more than the capabilities and intellect, but also moral soundness to be Mayor of a Rochester dealing with a variety of social issues. He says Evans will give the community all he has and will restore the faith of demoralized rank-and-file police officers in the Rochester Police Department.

Alexander said Rochester police are demoralized both because of national scrutiny and because of lack of leadership from city hall. He says police need to have faith in city hall.

Evans is currently running a Democratic Party primary against incumbent Mayor Lovely Warren, who is seeking a fourth term. The outcome of the June primary will essentially decide the race in the heavily-Democratic city.
