The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a technician working on a gas pump found an illegal credit card skimming device.
A spokesman says deputies went to Crosby’s Service Station on Lake Road in Hamlin after the device was found inside the pump. They believe the perpetrator had a special tool required to open up the pump so the skimmer could be put inside to steal credit card information. It couldn’t be seen from the outside.
Deputies say they don’t know how long the device was attached to the pump. A similar device was found at another Crosby’s in Kendall, Orleans County.
The sheriff’s office says anyone who bought gas recently a either stations needs to check their credit card statements and watch out for fraudulent activity.
