A Greece man suffered burns and was hospitalized early this morning when his car exploded into flames at a Portland Avenue gas station.
Rochester Police say officers on patrol heard loud explosions near Portland and Clifford Avenues about 12:19 this morning. They found a car in the Sunoco station parking lot engulfed in flames.
The driver, a 45-year-old Greece man, suffered burns to his upper and lower body. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and is expected to recover.
Police say the store surveillance cameras show the man had just filled a container with gasoline and was putting it into his truck when it exploded. The man was thrown backwards and his clothes caught fire. He rolled on the ground to put them out.
The Rochester Fire Department is investigating what triggered the explosion.
