First responders rescued a Phelps woman from the Erie Canal Sunday evening, after her car went off Route 31 and crashed into the water in Palmyra.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says 57-year-old Melinda Miller went off the road into a ditch, then down an embankment and into the canal. She got out of the car but was unable to swim to shore, so clung to the submerged car until rescuers got to her.
She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital to be checked out, and the wreck remains under investigation.
