The Gates Police Chief says Monroe County’s juvenile justice system is broken and it’s time to fix it.
Chief James Vanbrederode called a news conference Friday after his department arrested the same 15-year-old-girl three times in six days. They dropped her off each time at Family Court, and want to know why she was able to keep getting in trouble.
Vanbrederode was joined by juvenile division division employees and others who said one issue is lack of communication between Family Court and police agencies. Another is lack of funding for Family Court services to work with kids who get in trouble.
They’re calling for privacy laws to be changed so the courts can share information about juvenile defendants with police agencies.
