A string of violent incidents across Rochester on Wednesday left one man dead, two critically injured, and two police officers fired on by a man with a long gun.
The first incident came at 11:30 in the morning, at North Clinton Avenue near Kohlman Street. Three people were shot. One was pronounced dead, one was critically injured, and the third was recovering after getting to the hospital in a friend’s car.
Police noted the scene of the shooting was close to several schools and called it “terrible on the community and terrible on the officers.”
Next came a call for a stabbing at Joseph Avenue and Ludwig Park. A man was stabbed in the chest during an argument in a store and was taken to the hospital. His condition was upgraded to non-life threatening on Thursday morning.
At 1:30 p.m., a man was shot in the leg on South Plymouth Avenue near Doran Street. He’s recovering.
Finally, two investigators were in an unmarked car on Glenwood Avenue on the West Side when they noticed a man in the road with a long gun. He fired at least one shot at the officers. who jumped out of their car and returned fire. The man ran, but was caught after a brief foot chase. Nobody was hurt.
Police charged 18-year-old Kenneth Nixon with two counts of attempted assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and two counts of reckless endangerment and of menacing. He’ll be arraigned Friday in City Court.
Police have begun an internal investigation of the matter, and say this is yet another example of the dangers officers face in doing their duties.
