pittsford-centralThe Pittsford Central School District says ten of its students were injured when the bus carrying them to New York City on a class trip rolled over in a crash.

All of the students are now back home and safe. The district issued this statement Monday night:

All students home safe and soundThe MHS and SHS students are all home from the bus trip safe and sound. We will be following up with our families in the coming days.

Thank you to our parents, students, community, Syracuse emergency responders, our heroic bus driver, and Superintendent Stone from Marathon Central Schools for providing lunch to our waiting students. We are grateful for you all.

That trip ended when one of the buses overturned on a snowy I-81 north of Binghamton.  School Superintendent Mike Pero says the highway conditions turned out to be worse than predicted. Pittsford Central canceled school for the day due to weather conditions after the trip departed. Questions were immediately raised about why the buses were allowed to leave.

Business students from Mendon and Sutherland high schools were aboard several charter buses, when a bus carrying 40 Mendon students rolled over on Interstate-81 near Marathon, south of Cortland.  State Police are investigating that accident and say the driver tried to avoid another accident, but lost control on the snowy road. Video of the bus rolling over was seen on ABC Evening News. It was shot by a driver stopped behind a crash on the opposite side of the highway.

Students immediately texted their parents and friends with photos of the overturned bus.

According to the district, 10 students suffered minor injuries, some while jumping out the window exits of the overturned bus. They were transported to a Cortland hospital, where they were treated and released.

The trip was canceled and the Sutherland bus has returned to the school about 3:00 p.m. The Mendon students got back later Monday evening.
