Gates police have identified the victim of Wednesday’s carjack shooting on Buell Road as 71-year-old Richard Sciascia of Irondequoit. Police say he was the innocent victim of a pair of carjackers who have committed at least 14 crimes across Monroe County.

Gates police also say the black sedan with tinted windows they were looking for in connection with the Buell Road shooting is now in their custody after a chase Wednesday night on the west side of Rochester. Rochester police were assisting Gates police with an investigation when they began pursuing that car. The suspect abandoned the car and fled on foot, but was apprehended on Danforth Street. A juvenile was taken into custody, but was released after the investigation.

Police say the public should be alert to their surroundings while driving, and stay in their cars if they suspect they’re being followed.

Gates police are heading a multi-agency task force to catch the carjackers. They continue to ask the public to call in any tips that could assist the police in identifying the suspects by calling 911 or a special tip line has been set up at Gates Police 429-8275.
