Investigators with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office believe the race car fire that seriously burned a driver at the Paradise Speedway in Geneva started with a broken fuel line.

Last weekend’s fire left Michael Humphrey of Oswego County with burns over 60 percent of his body. He had just taken a practice run on the track and had pulled off when his car stalled, then burst into flames. Other drivers and fans ran and pulled Humphrey out of the burning car.

Deputies say it appears the fuel line on the micro-sprint car somehow disconnected from the engine, causing fuel to be pumped inside the body of the car. When Humphrey tried to restart his stalled engine, the spilled fuel caught fire.
