The Brighton Central School District is hoping to be the first in Monroe County to become zero waste.

The Brighton School Board approved a first reading of its Zero Waste Policy last month, and the district is working on the final version of a plan to encourage reuse of everything possible. The goal is for nothing to be thrown away or sent to landfills or incinerators.

Their first goal is to eliminate 80 percent of their waste stream. Over the next several years, Brighton hopes to become a Certified Zero Waste Facility. That actually means 90 percent of what it used to throw away is recycled and reused. They’re hoping they can also save energy and save money.

The district is working with Brighton-based Impact Earth, a zero waste solutions company that specializes in working with food providers, food trucks and festivals to reduce waste.
