The Cannons rally to edge Florida, 11-10, to gain a playoff berth.
The Rochester Rattlers were eliminated from the Major League Lacrosse playoffs on Saturday evening when the Boston Cannons rallied from an 8-4 deficit to beat the Florida Launch, 11-10, in Boston.
Boston and Rochester both ended the regular season with 8-6 records, but the Cannons swept the season series from the Rattlers to hold the tie-breaker advantage.
“A 92-yard goal might be our demise,” Rattlers head coach Tim Soudan said on Thursday following Rochester’s 18-9 win over the Atlanta Blaze at Wegmans Sports Complex at Aquinas Institute.
And so that turned out to be the case. The Cannons scored a 2-point goal on a 92-yard shot at the final buzzer during the game in Boston for a 2-point goal that tied the Rattlers 15-15. Boston then won the game, 16-15, in overtime.
Had the Rattlers won, they would be in the playoffs with a 9-5 record while Boston would have been on the outside looking in at 7-7.
The past two seasons the Rattlers gained the Steinfeld Cup championship game, only to lose it both times to a fourth-quarter rally by the Denver Outlaws (2014), and New York Lizards (2015).
