The Erie Canal is closed down as of Monday morning between Brockport and Middleport.
Canal workers will drop the guard gates and begin draining that section of the canal so work crews can get at a leak beneath a culvert in the Town of Murray. All boats were to be west of Middleport or East of Brockport by Sunday night.
The Villages of Brockport, Spencerport, Medina and Middleport have suspended their 48-hour mooring limits on their canal walls during the repair project.
The canal corporation estimates it will take a couple of weeks to fix the problem, in part because it takes days to drain that 15-mile stretch.
