The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is advising boaters to keep their speeds and wakes down within 1,000 feet of shore…particularly on Irondequoit Bay.
Water levels are unusually high right now…with the International Joint Commission reporting that water levels on Lake Ontario have risen by 10 inches just since the start of April thanks to the heavy rains this month. Large wakes from fast-moving boats threaten to cause significant damage to residents and boaters along the shoreline.
They also want you to be aware of significant debris in Lake Ontario, the way and surrounding waterways thanks to the windstorm, plus the rains. There may be trees and floating objects that could damage your boat…and docks and other near-shore objects may be partly submerged and hard to see until you’re right on top of them.
