The Livingston County Health Department is warning that a blue-green algae bloom has been spotted in Conesus Lake, near the Southern Shores Campground.
Blue-green algae produce toxins that can cause skin rashes, cold-like symptoms and nausea. They tend to accumulate in calm, warm water.
The health department says the water supply is safe to drink and it’s sampling and monitoring the lake water. But it’s advising people to stay away from water that’s discolored or has a scum on the surface and don’t let pets come into contact with it.
