The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester says Bishop Emeritus Matthew Clark is in “declining health” and his condition is “now quite serious.”

In a letter to the diocese, Bishop Salvatore Matano said he had visited Bishop Clark at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse where he is in nursing care. He called on priests, deacons, religious and lay faithful in the diocese to pray for the retired bishop.

Bishop Clark is 85. He led the diocese from 1979 to 2012, announcing in 2019 that he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
