August 14th begins the one year period under state law when people who were sexually abused as children may come forward and file charges despite the statute of limitations.
A law firm representing many victims says at least 100 people have already indicated they plan to sue the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester over abuse by priests…and that number could go far higher.
Bishop Salvatore Matano said in a statement released on the Diocese web page that “many difficult decisions will have to be made” as the diocese could conceivably face millions of dollars in settlements. The bishop said “we are reviewing all possibilities…that certainly include a path that is sensitive and fair to all victims.”
The bishop repeated a personal apology to any victims of clergy abuse and encouraged them to continue their relationship with God.
