The Bills made a pair of roster additions on offense and released a former second-round draft choice in the process.
Buffalo Bills Insider Chris Brown provides the details. Here is his report:
The Bills new front office figures to do a lot of roster shaping over the next few months leading up to the 2017 campaign. On Wednesday they made additions on offense signing free agent TE Wes Saxton and WR Rod Streater.
Saxton (6-4, 235) and Streater (6-3, 216) bring noticeable size to Buffalo’s passing attack. Both were signed after participating in a 11-player workout at One Bills Drive on Tuesday.
Streater, 29, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Oakland Raiders after they signed him as an undrafted rookie in 2012. His most productive season came in 2013 when he had 60 receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns.
Since then opportunities on offense became scarce for Streater, who has made just 28 receptions over the last three seasons. He spent the 2016 season with the San Francisco 49ers after the Chiefs, who signed him to a one-year free agent deal, only to trade him and a seventh-round pick to the 49ers for a seventh-round pick. Streater had 18 catches for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns last season.
Saxton, 23, is another former undrafted product out of South Alabama. He was signed by the New York Jets after the 2015 NFL draft. He spent a year on the Jets practice squad, and was re-signed for the 2016 season, but did not make the final roster.
Washington signed him to their practice squad this past season and then re-signed him as a reserve future free agent, but waived him on May 15th. He has not appeared in an NFL regular season game.
At South Alabama, Saxton had 96 receptions for just over 1,100 yards and a touchdown in three seasons.
Kouandjio, Woodrum released
To make room on the roster for the two signings, Buffalo released Cyrus Kouandjio and QB Josh Woodrum.
Kouandjio had an up and down career with the Bills. The former second-round pick (2014) appeared in 25 games for the Bills making just seven starts as he found it difficult to crack Buffalo’s starting lineup as he was outperformed by fellow draft classmate Seantrel Henderson early in their careers.
Just 23-years old, Kouandjio also battled injuries, the last of which happened away from the field when a fall at his home resulted in a hip injury that required surgery this past January.
Buffalo also released QB Josh Woodrum. Signed by the Bills as a reserve future free agent this past January, Woodrum was caught in a numbers game at quarterback, especially after the Bills selected QB Nate Peterman in the fifth-round of the 2017 NFL draft.
