Preseason records: Buffalo (1-1), NY Giants (0-2)
In a nutshell:
The Bills turned a pair of first half fumble recoveries into 14 points as they took a 21-0 lead into halftime and coasted to victory beating the Giants by the same score Saturday for their first win at New Era Field. The shutout win was Buffalo’s first in the preseason since Aug. 17, 1996 when they beat Carolina 24-0.
Buffalo struck first with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tyrod Taylor to LeSean McCoy with just under 13 minutes left in the second quarter to take a 7-0 first-half lead.
Jonathan Williams turned the first turnover into a touchdown on a one-yard run and Greg Littlescored on a 19-yard touchdown catch to capitalize on the other. It gave Buffalo a 21-0 first half lead, and the defense took care of the rest stifling the Giants run game and holding New York’s offense to just one third down conversion in the game.
How it went down:
-Buffalo got on the board first when Tyrod Taylor found LeSean McCoy in the right side of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter. It capped a seven-play 52-yard scoring drive. Taylor hit McCoy out of the backfield and a sliding Marquise Goodwin on back-to-back plays for a combined 40 yards to move the offense into scoring territory.
-The Bills would score off their first takeaway when Jonathan Williams went over the top of the pile for a one-yard scoring plunge with just under five minutes in the first half. Jordan Gay’s extra point however, caromed off the right upright (13-0).
-With 31 seconds left in the half Sterling Moore sacked Nassib to force a fumble that Adolphus Washington recovered to set up 1st-and-10 at the Giants 19-yard line. One play was all it took at EJ Manuel hit Greg Little for a 19-yard score and followed with a successful two-point conversion pass to Dez Lewis (21-0).
Subplots:
-Jerel Worthy and Corbin Bryant started on Buffalo’s defensive line in place of Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams who were not active. Worthy looked very strong in the game posting a pair of tackles for loss.
-In the Bills starting secondary Duke Williams earned the start at safety in place of Aaron Williams. Kevon Seymour was the team’s starting nickel corner with Nickell Robey-Coleman out with an ankle injury.
-Jerome Felton appeared to be going in for a touchdown, but was stripped of the ball at the goal line on 3rd-and-goal when Landon Collins helmet and shoulder made contact with Felton’s arm and the ball popping it loose. The Giants recovered in their end zone for a touchback.
-Zach Brown and Bryson Albright teamed up for a turnover. Brown stripped RB Andre Williams and Albright recovered. Later in the half Sterling Moore sacked QB Ryan Nassib, who fumbled, and Adolphus Washington recovered the loose ball. Buffalo scored touchdowns off both turnovers.
-Rookie RB Jonathan Williams was lined up in the backfield on both Bills first-half possessions that had goal-to-go situations.
-Greg Little was denied a touchdown reception late in the first half for being unable to complete the catch as he rolled out of the back of the end zone. After a turnover the Bills went right back to Little on the same play and he successfully made the play for a 19-yard score.
-Tyrod Taylor played into the early stages of the second quarter and finished 7-10 for 132 yards and a touchdown. He had a passer rating of 145.8.
-Buffalo’s defense was again stout on third down holding the Giants offense to just 1-for-11 on third down conversions (9%).
-EJ Manuel had a solid outing going 8-13 for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also had a two-point conversion pass. Cardale Jones got the entire second half to work. He finished the game 6-12 passing for 83 yards and an interception.
-Corey White paced the secondary with four pass breakups. He also had a touchdown-saving tackle on Giants RB Bobby Rainey.
-Mike Gillislee left the game in the first half to be evaluated for a possible concussion.
