Buffalo runs all over San Francisco in the 45-16 victory.
Buffalo Bills Insider Chris Brown provides a recap of the lopsided victory. Here is his report:
Regular season records: Buffalo (4-2), San Francisco (1-5)
In a nutshell:
The game was a nip and tuck battle through two and a half quarters despite another monster effort by LeSean McCoy, but after Buffalo’s defense forced a turnover on downs at their own 40-yard line late in the third quarter, the Bills outscored the 49ers 21-3 in a span of seven minutes of game clock to win going away 38-16.
For the Bills it was their fourth straight win, marking the first such streak since 2008.
After the 49ers made it a one score game (24-16) after a Phil Dawson field goal 12 seconds into the fourth quarter, Buffalo answered with 21 unanswered points to close out the game.
Following McCoy’s last touchdown run with 11 minutes left in the game, Nickell Robey-Coleman forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that was recovered by Jonathan Meeks. Tyrod Taylor found Robert Woods for a touchdown five plays later as Buffalo put up 14 points in 23 seconds to blow the game open.
Mike Gillislee capped the scoring with a 44-yard touchdown run with six minutes remaining.
McCoy spearheaded the Buffalo effort with three rushing touchdowns and 140 yards on the ground and the Bills offense went four for four in the red zone. Their 45 points scored was Buffalo’s highest total since scoring 49 on Nov. 21, 2010 at Cincinnati.
How it went down:
-The 49ers took advantage of a turnover to get on the scoreboard first going 13 yards on seven plays with Phil Dawson putting a 33-yard field goal attempt up and through for a 3-0 lead with 5:43 left in the opening quarter.
-Buffalo responded on the ensuing possession with a 75-yard touchdown drive capped by a LeSean McCoy four-yard touchdown.
-A blown coverage led to San Francisco’s first touchdown of the game as Colin Kaepernick found a wide open Torrey Smith for a 53-yard touchdown to put the 49ers ahead 10-7 less than a minute into the second quarter.
-The Bills offense again had an answer as they marched 75 yards for a second time on a seven-play drive capped by LeSean McCoy’s second rushing touchdown of the day from 11 yards out off a direct snap in a Wildcat formation. It put Buffalo up 14-10 with 10 minutes left in the half.
-The Niners got three points back on a 48-yard field goal from Dawson to cut Buffalo’s lead to one (14-13) with just under six minutes left in the second quarter.
-Buffalo pushed their lead back up to four as they got a 40-yard field goal from Dan Carpenter to make it 17-13 at the half.
-The second half began quietly until Tyrod Taylor hit Nick O’Leary 23 yards before finding Justin Hunter behind the defense for a 30-yard touchdown strike to put the Bills up 11 with three minutes left in the third quarter.
-San Francisco wouldn’t go away as the Niners were able to move the ball well enough to get another field goal from Phil Dawson from 47 yards out to make it a one score game (24-16) just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter.
-Again the Bills would turn to McCoy, who finished off another Buffalo long drive using his trademark elusiveness to reach the end zone on an 18-yard touchdown run with 11 minutes left in the game (31-16).
-On the ensuing kickoff Nickell Robey-Coleman forced a fumble and Jonathan Meeks recovered at the 49ers 27-yard line. Five plays later Tyrod Taylor found Robert Woods for a five-yard touchdown reception to effectively put the game away with 10 minutes left in regulation (38-16).
-Mike Gillislee put the exclamation point on the victory with a 44-yard touchdown run to make it a 45-16 final.
Subplots:
-The Bills had a season high 312 yards rushing. As a team they averaged 7.1 yards per carry. It was the team’s highest total since Nov. 22, 1992 vs. Atlanta.
-LeSean McCoy had more than 100 yards rushing in the first half and averaged better than nine yards a carry (9.6). He also had a pair of touchdown runs. He finished the game with 19 carries for 140 yards and three touchdowns.
-Tyrod Taylor was 17-26 passing (65.4%) for 179 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also had 68 yards rushing on eight carries.
-Buffalo’s offense went 8-for-13 on third down conversions (62%) and were a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone.
-Lorenzo Alexander became the first Bill with a six-game sack streak since Aaron Schobel in games 10-15 in 2006 with a fourth quarter sack and forced fumble on Colin Kaepernick. With eight sacks, Alexander has tied Mario Williams in 2013 for the most sacks by a Bill in the first six games of the season.
-Nickell Robey-Coleman forced a fumble on a San Francisco kick return by Keshawn Martin and the loose ball was recovered by Jonathan Meeks.
-Buffalo’s defense forced a turnover on downs midway through the third quarter when they stopped San Francisco on a 3rd-and-1 and a 4th-and-1 at the Bills 40-yard line.
-The Bills gave up 10 points on two mental errors. A missed blocking assignment led to a turnover deep in Buffalo territory and a field goal. A blown coverage led to a 53-yard touchdown catch by Torrey Smith.
-Both LeSean McCoy and Robert Woods were injured in the span of two plays late in the first half, but both returned to the game in the third quarter.
