LeSean McCoy has pushed through some early season run game struggles to put up his typically solid production.
Buffalo Bills Insider Chris Brown provides the details. Here is his report:
Through the course of what has become a challenging season for the Bills, there has been a constant. He hasn’t been ultra-productive every week, but LeSean McCoy has been the most reliable weapon for Buffalo this season.
The Bills run game hasn’t been what it was the previous two seasons, but steadily McCoy has rounded into form after some inconsistent outings early in the season.
It was due in part to a scheme change that relied more on a zone blocking scheme, which was in stark contrast to what the offense executed the previous two years.
As the offense has adjusted to focus on more of what they’ve executed well, McCoy has been able to pop some more big runs.
In three of his last four games, McCoy has averaged better than 5.5 yards per carry. That has lifted his yards per carry average from 3.4 yards per carry up to 4.2 yards per rush. He now sits fourth in the AFC in rushing yards with 709.
This past Sunday, McCoy put up his third 100-yard rushing day of the season as he averaged almost nine yards per carry and posted a pair of touchdowns.
It was the 36th 100-yard rushing day of his career. That ranks third among active running backs with only Adrian Peterson (51) and Frank Gore (41) having more.
The team leader in receptions, McCoy also had a receiving touchdown in Sunday’s loss.
Those two touchdowns Sunday give him 74 in his career since 2010, tied for the most in the league with Rob Gronkowski over that span.
In less than three full seasons with the Bills, McCoy (2,871) needs just 62 rushing yards to crack the Bills top 10 for rushing yards and pass Antowain Smith (2,932).
McCoy is also closing in on 10,000 rushing yards for his career, needing just 337 over the final six games to reach the milestone.
