Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan has been let go after two seasons following a disappointing year. His brother Rob, who was hired this year as assistant head coach, has also been relieved of duties.

The Bills have Tweeted that GM Doug Whaley will officially lead the search for a new head coach. It will be his third in five years.

The firing comes just two days after the Bills were mathematically eliminated from a playoff berth for the 17th year in a row. Ryan spoke Monday in what turned out to be his final news conference…defending what were widely criticized as blunders in the overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins but saying it was ultimately his responsibility.

Hall of Fame Running  Back Thurman Thomas said on the John Murphy show in Buffalo that Ryan may not have gotten all he needed from his players, but ultimately Ryan was right: the responsibility was his.

Offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn will serve as interim head coach for the season’s final game against the Jets.
