The State Assembly has approved the bill allowing rideshare services to start operating at the end of June across New York State. The bill had already passed the Senate, and Governor Cuomo has said he’ll sign it.
That will allow Uber and Lyft to start operating in Upstate New York before the July 4th weekend. Legislators wanted to move the date up so they’d be available for Independence Day weekend partiers who might be less tempted to drink and drive if they could catch an Uber ride. That’s 10 days earlier than it was set to begin anyway after being approved in the state budget deal.
The delay that made the budget late pushed the effective start-date back to July 9th.
