More than 650 Cyclists are pedaling along the Erie Canal Towpath trail today…leaving Buffalo Sunday on their way to Albany as part of the annual Cycle the Erie Canal Tour. This year’s event has special significance, because it’s happening on the bicentennial of the canal itself.
The riders started from Medina Monday morning and will tie up for the night in Pittsford. This is the 19th year the New York State Canal Corporation has sponsored the ride, which covers 40 to 50 miles a day along the 400 miles from Buffalo to Albany.
It also highlights progress on finishing the canalway trail, which is 80 percent done. The remaining gaps are in the Buffalo area, in the Finger Lakes and in Central New York. The entire trail should be finished by the end of 2020.
