Monroe County Executive Adam Bello says social distancing has helped hold the COVID-19 disease in check locally, but adds that the community must now maintain its efforts.

He said non-essential businesses that stay open are now risking a $1,000 fine, but he stopped short of saying people who continue to gather in groups would face fines as well.

At a Monday news conference, Bello said the county appears to have “flattened the curve” in growth of coronavirus infections. He said now is notg the time to take the foot off the gas pedal, but to double down and continue those efforts. Bello said he’s been talking with the City of Rochester and the suburban towns to make sure citizens are following social distancing. He said he’s been working with police agencies about educating people who gather in groups about the need for social distancing.

Bello encouraged people aware of social distancing violations to call 911 and report them.

The County Executive says it’s appearing unlikely that schools will reopen this school year. Any such decision would be made in collaboration with area school superintendents, the Health Department and State officials.
