Monroe County Executive Adam Bello says findings of inadequate training, flawed procedures and outdated practices led him to ask for the resignation of the County Probation Department’s Director. He’ll be replaced temporarily by County Public Safety Director Richard Tantalo.

Bello says two separate independent investigations of the probation department showed the same failings. He ordered the reviews after Shaddad Algaithy, a sex offender on probation, was accused of raping a teenage girl in a corner store across the street from a school. Algaithy shouldn’t have been working so close to a school, and Bello says the department turned out to have no means of verifying that fact.

Bello says there will be a national search for a new probation director. He says personnel will be cross-trained and a national expert will be brought in to design new procedures for the department. There will also be a salary review for probation officers.

Bello says this is all to make sure the Algaithy situation never occurs again.
