For the first time in 32 years, a Democrat will serve as Monroe County Executive. Adam Bello defeated Republican incumbent Cheryl Dinolfo Tuesday night, by 51 to 49 percent of the vote and with a margin of about 5,400 votes in the unofficial returns.

It was a close race through the night until Bello began to pull away and the numbers then remained consistent for the rest of the evening.

Bello was elected Supervisor of Irondequoit and was appointed Monroe County Clerk by Governor Cuomo in 2016. He held off a Republican challenge to win the seat later than year.

Dinolfo said in her concession speech that she’s been proud to build new jobs for Monroe County, and to deliver a lower property tax rate. She said she will continue to move forward. Bello said the county needed a new direction, including filling Child Protective Services positions that have been unfilled leading to heavy caseloads for the workers.
