A young black bear seen wandering around southern Monroe County since Monday was tranquilized and removed from a tree on the Rochester Institute of Technology Campus today after he was spotted near the F Parking Lot.
One or more young bears have been sighted this week, including on the grounds of the Wheatland-Chili High School and the Riverton development in Henrietta.
Someone noticed a 100 pound bear up a tree next to the F Lot this morning. The RIT Tweeted a notice for people to stay away and called the Department of Environmental Conservation. A crowd gathered in spite of the warning and watched as a DEC crew tranquilized the bear, caught it in nets and loaded it into a truck.
DEC says it will get a health check, be tagged and taken to a more suitable habitat. The agency says the recent dry spell has young bears out looking for food and checking out garbage cans.
