Last season, Buffalo attempted to supplement their defense by bringing in defensive end Trent Murphy and cornerback Vontae Davis in free agency. The team selected linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in the first round of the draft and Harrison Phillips in the third round last April. These moves were met with mix results.
Beane continued, “you know, you say, ‘Well, you didn’t need this position.’ Well, you’re one injury away, or this guy’s got one year left on a contract, and you want to draft a good player so that you can let that guy walk and not have to pay him $10, $15 million or whatever it is.”
Many draftniks predict that the this year’s edition of the NFL draft will see many defensive players go at the top of the draft. This could put pressure on Beane to follow through with his best player available theory. However, the struggles of the offense could not be neutralized by the defense consistently during the 2018 season.
Thus, Beane must weight the opportunity of developing a dominant defense at the cost of the offense or meet the challenge of providing franchise quarterback Josh Allen with weapons and protection on offense. If he can succeed in acquiring players on both sides of the ball who can dominate opponents, then the Bills may have a run of success they have not seen for a quarter of a century.
