Monroe County tilted blue Tuesday night…as Democrats won key races including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a vacant seat on the Monroe County Legislature and the Town Supervisor’s offices in Henrietta and Clarkson.
They also won two seats on the Pittsford Town Board, with one of the winners saying “we didn’t want the table, just a seat at the table.”
Todd Baxter defeated incumbent Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn by a 22,000 vote margin. Baxter took the stage saying “to God be the glory” following the massive win, and said he’s already spoken with Sheriff O’Flynn, who reached out to him about the transition.
Baxter says he’ll take the oath not as a Democrat or a Republican but as a law officer. He pledged cooperation with all other police agencies in Monroe County and a strong focus on helping people break the cycle of addiction to opioid drugs.
Sheriff O’Flynn says “he’ll see what comes up” for his future, and that he’s shocked and disappointed with his loss.
Monroe County GOP chairman Bill Reilich says the losses will push Republicans to work harder for 2018.
