The Democratic candidate for Monroe County Sheriff, Todd Baxter, says if elected he’ll take the politics out of the sheriff’s office.
Baxter issued a plan to create a “firewall” between law enforcement and politics, as he puts it. He released a six-point plan that starts with the sheriff not endorsing other candidates for elected office. Other points include not appearing in ads for other candidates, and neither donating to other campaigns or accepting funds from political parties.
Baxter also says the sheriff shouldn’t accept donations from appointed staff members or allow appointed staff members to serve on political committees.
Incumbent Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn responds with a statement saying “to suggest politics interferes with the operation of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is a desperate attempt to score cheap political points.”
