A second photonics company isn’t coming to Eastman Business Park, where the state is hoping to build a Photonics Center based in Rochester.

Avogy, a maker of wireless charging systems for electronic devices, was supposed to drive economic growth in Rochester. But now the company has declared bankruptcy before moving here.

Nearly two years ago, Governor Cuomo announced that Avogy and Photonica would relocate from California to Rochester as part of its photonics hub. They were supposed to invest a total of $1.6 billion and bring 1,400 new jobs to Rochester.

Instead, Photonica was dumped by state economic development authorities last year after they determined the company wasn’t capable of moving forward, and now Avogy is out of business. The state never paid out the $40 million it had pledged to relocate the companies here.
