A Rochester attorney has been charged with trying to smuggle drugs to an inmate in the Monroe County Jail.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has charged 32-year-old Michael Witmer with promoting prison contraband. According to papers filed in court, he dropped off a towel at the jail intended for inmate Herbert Johnson. Deputies found a long, thin cellophane-wrapped package of marijuana hidden along the seam of the towel.

Johnson was one of Witmer’s clients, in jail for robbery.
