An attempt by Republican New York State lawmakers to end the school mask mandate failed in the state legislature on Monday.

Senate Republicans tried to force a vote on Governor Hochul’s mandate for schools and daycare centers. All 20 Republicans voted for it, but none of the Democratic majority crossed party lines and the measure failed.

Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt said in a statement: “This amendment was an opportunity for every New Yorker to learn where their State Senator stands on this issue, and it’s clear: Senate Republicans stand with New Yorkers, and Senate Democrats are content to let political science continue to drive the decisions coming out of Albany.”

Meanwhile, Bo Wright, the head of the Monroe County Council of School Superintendents, said his group wants clear communication from the state about when the mask mandate will end. They also want time to prepare for it and to notify families of what’s going on.
