New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie on Thursday evening authorized the assembly’s Judiciary Committee to begin an impeachment investigation against Governor Andrew Cuomo.

This was after a sixth woman came forward to accuse the governor of sexual harassment. She said the governor touched her under her blouse after she was called to the Executive Mansion to help him with his cell phone. That’s on top of the nursing home dispute in which the Cuomo Administration is accused of sending COVID infected patients back into nursing homes.

The assembly committee will be able to subpoena documents, question witnesses and examine other evidence.

Heastie said the reports and accusations concerning the governor are serious, and he called for a full investigation. He said it will not interfere with the investigation being started by the New York Attorney General’s Office.

121 lawmakers now say the governor should resign, both Republicans and Democrats. That’s enough to impeach the governor should it come to a vote.
