Officials at the Rochester Institute of Technology say Artist in Residence Wendell Castle has died at his home in Scottsville. He was 85.

Castle was a celebrated designer and craftsman who revolutionized the design and construction of American furniture…and is widely recognized as the “father of the art furniture movement.” His work crossed over from practical use into the world of sculpture, and his pieces are in the permanent collections of more than 50 museums and galleries around the world.

Until recently, Castle taught a graduate industrial design seminar at RIT. Mr. Castle also regularly opened up his Scottsville studio to give RIT students in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences (CIAS) a peek behind the scenes into the inner workings of his practice.
