The mid-level New York State appeals court has tossed out the congressional redistricting maps drawn by the Democratic majority state legislature after a bipartisan panel was unable to come to an agreement.
The court majority ruled that the districts as drawn amounted to a Democratic gerrymander.
Legislature Democrats immediately said they will appeal, setting up a battle next week before the Court of Appeals. The decision, when it finally comes, will influence how New York’s Congressional seats are divided between Democrats and Republicans. It does not affect state legislature boundaries.
The primary for congressional candidates is June 28th, and new congressional districts should be in place before then.
