The Town of Irondequoit begins its annual deer management bow hunt on Monday. Done in conjunction with the State Department of Environmental Conservation, the program allows trained and tested bow hunters to cut down Irondequoit’s urban deer population.
The town began the program more than 20 years ago to help manage the large number of deer residing in the town, and especially to control car-deer accidents.
Irondequoit police administer the program, which is conducted on properties whose owners give consent, by hunters who are authorized and have passed a proficiency test.
The bow hunt takes place only on school days, from sunrise to noon.
