Syracuse scores all 4 goals in the second period in the Crunch’s 4-1 win.
The Syracuse Crunch opened their American Hockey League season with a 4-1 victory over the Rochester Americans on Saturday night in the Salt City.
After a scoreless first period, the Crunch crushed Amerk goalie Linus Ullmark for 4 goals in the second stanza.
Justin Bailey averted the shutout for Rochester with a goal nearly 7 minutes into the third period for his first goal of the season.
The same two teams will play again at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday at the Blue Cross Arena.
The Americans announced on Saturday that the team signed forward Justin Vaive to a 25-game Professional Tryout.
Vaive, 27, has appeared in one game with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL this season. A native of Buffalo, Vaive spent the entire 2015-16 campaign with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, where he scored 11 goals and added six assists for 17 points in 63 games. In 208 career AHL games with San Antonio, Hartford, and Bridgeport, the 6-foot-6, 240-pound forward has amassed 58 points on 28 goals and 30 assists.
Prior to turning pro, Vaive played four years at Miami University (Ohio), recording 46 points (23+23) in 160 games for the RedHawks. He was drafted in the fourth round (92nd overall) by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
