Evan Rodrigues and C.J. Smith pace Rochester with 3 points each in the 5-2 win over the Penguins.
WILKES-BARRE, PA. — The Rochester Americans erupted for 4 goals in the second period en route to a 5-2 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night before 6,983 fans at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Evan Rodrigues scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season since being re-assigned by the Buffalo Sabres to pace the Rochester offense. He also picked up an assist.
C.J. Smith continued his hot scoring streak with 1 goal and 2 assists for a team-high 23 points.
The Penguins opened the scoring against Rochester netminder Linus Ullmark early in the second period.
About 5 minutes later, Eric Cornel tied the game off assists from Nick Baptiste and Colin Blackwell.
Rodrigues put the Amerks (12-5-3-2) in front to stay less than 2 minutes later, off assists from Seth Griffith and Smith. Garret Ross followed with his fourth goal of the season as Adam Krause and Brendan Guhle drew assists.
Rodrigues completed the stanza with a power play tally as Smith and Stuart Percy contributed to the goal.
In the third period, the Amerks were tagged with their sixth short-handed goal allowed on the season, but Smith got that back in the final minute off assists from Rodrigues and Casey Nelson.
Ullmark finished with 22 saves in improving his record to 10-3-2-1.
*NOTES — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has recalled forward Hudson Fasching from the Rochester Americans. Fasching (22, 6-foot-, 204 lbs.) joins the Sabres for the first time this season after recording three points (1+2) in 17 games for the team during the last two seasons. Playing in his second AHL season in 2017-18, the Milwaukee, WI., native has totaled 9 points and is tied for the Amerks’ team lead with 6 goals…The Amerks continue their road trip next weekend to New England for 3 games against Springfield, Hartford, and Bridgewater.
