The Rochester Institute of Technology is working with Rochester police on a way to use Artificial Intelligence to sort through body worn camera footage. The Rochester Police Department has been using body worn cameras since 2016 to improve police-community relations and aid investigations of misconduct complaints.
Professor Ernest Fokoue of RITs School of Mathematical Sciences received a $1 million Justice Department grant to conduct a study over the next three years. It will look at how AI can sort through the massive amount of data gathered by 500 body worn cameras in use by the RPD. It will look for trends by reviewing data that’s just too much for human researchers to process.
They hope to share what they learn with other police departments around the country.
