Speaking in Rochester Thursday afternoon, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the report on “crime guns” he issued this week can be used to target more cops into high-crime areas…but it’s main use may be to identify specific out-of-state gun dealers, who sell large numbers of weapons that are seized during crimes in New York.
Schneiderman’s staff analyzed tens of thousands of guns seized by law enforcement during crime investigations. His report finds that 74 percent of so-called “crime guns” came from out-of-state, circumventing New York’s gun control laws.
Schneiderman says they’ve been able to identify what he calls “bad actors,” dealerships where large numbers of the illegal guns smuggled into New York are being legally sold, and people who are buying them. He says they hope to go after them personally.
