Advocates boosting a law based on the case of Daniel Prude met in Albany Wednesday to rally for what they call “Daniel’s Law.” It would set up a statewide network of mental health crisis teams that could respond to people suffering a mental health crisis instead of police officers.

It’s named after Daniel Prude, who died in 2020 a week after he was restrained by Rochester police officers while suffering such a crisis on Genesee Street. The officers who handcuffed Prude and put a “spit sock” over his face were not charged.

State Senator Samra Brouk of Rochester joined the group saying people in crisis deserve compassionate care, and the state should act so another such tragedy doesn’t happen.
