Shotgun season starts Saturday across Western New York, and the AAA is warning drivers to be especially on the lookout for deer running across the road.

It’s also the height of their mating season, so the deer population is on the move. Monroe has the third highest number of deer crashes in the state according to the 2016 numbers, the latest available. There were 202 car-deer crashes in November of that year.

The AAA recommends keeping an eye on the shoulders of the roads as well as straight ahead.
