Gasoline prices have retreated a bit across Western and Central New York, but are still considerably higher than a year ago. And the American Automobile Association says this decline is probably temporary.

The New York State average for a gallon of regular gas is now $2.54. Rochester’s average dropped by a penny last week to $2.47. Buffalo was up a cent to $2.47 and Syracuse was down a penny at $2.43.

Those prices are from the AAA, which says gas will cost more in 2017 and prices could top 2015 levels. But experts say they won’t drop back to the lows seen in 2016.
